Optimistic about sales of the upcoming Ameo, Volkswagen has added another production shift at its Chakan plant which makes it a round-the-clock plant now.
Although domestic sales aren’t all that high, Volkswagen has a lot to do with India. It has a huge factory in Chakan from which it exports a huge number of cars every year. This helps it keep the production cost low eventually leading to better profits. But what is in it for India? More production needs more people which is what the German carmaker has done now.
Optimistic about the demand of the Volkswagen Ameo compact sedan, the company has added third production shift at its plant near Pune. The additional production capacity will be needed for growing export numbers and to cater to the domestic market as well. The new shift already has 800 new employees and more will be hired in the near future.
The Chakan manufacturing facility rolled out the first car in March 2009 and exactly seven years later, it has become a round-the-clock plant. Until last year, the plant had a production capacity of 1.3 lakh units and 1.23 lakh cars were produced. With the current capacity expansion, the production is expected to increase by 15%.
The Volkswagen Ameo is a very important car for the company as it has been specifically designed for the Indian market keeping in mind the small car excise duty rule. The carmaker wants to leave no stone unturned and has equipped the sedan with all the possible features from the word go. Pricing will be the key to its success.
