Renault has announced it will start a third shift in its Oragadam plant in Chennai to slash down the waiting period of the Kwid hatchback.
Renault’s Kwid has been accepted well by customers. Sales of the car have been incredible since launch in late-2015. The Kwid is produced at the Renault-Nissan Oragadam plant near Chennai which manufactures vehicles for both companies. The cars produced range from small hatchbacks to SUVs from both the automajors.
The Oragadam plant presently is capable of producing 1000 cars per day working on a two-shift cycle. This figure is expected to increase to 1600 cars a day after the initiation of the third shift. Renault will start working on the same from 1st April 2016. For achieving the goal of producing 1600 cars a day, 2000 people are being hired directly. Around 2500 vendors and suppliers are also being arranged for.
The major reason behind commencing the third shift is to bring down the waiting period of the current 6-7 months to under 3 months. The overwhelming response for the Kwid was unexpected. Another chief reason behind the increase in the production is that the Renault Kwid 1.0-litre and AMT versions, and Datsun Redi-GO are set to be launched in the coming months. So the need for increase in production capacity is crucial.
Currently, 80 percent of the production from the Oragadam plant is Renault products, while the rest of the production capacity is used by Nissan and its sub-brand Datsun. Nissan’s current product range includes the Micra, Sunny and Terrano while Renault produces the Kwid, Pulse, Scala, Duster and Lodgy.
