The Supreme Court banned sales of diesel SUVs having engine capacities above 2.0-litre and hence Mahindra has introduced downsized 1.99-litre engines for the Scorpio and XUV500 to tackle the ban.
Owing to increasing air pollution, the Supreme Court has banned the sales of diesel SUVs with engines of 2.0-litre or more in Delhi. Tackling this ban, Mahindra very quickly came up with a 1.99-litre diesel engine which is nothing but a downsized version of the 2.2-litre mHawk motor that powers the Scorpio and XUV500.
The 1.99-litre engine produces 120 HP of power and 280 Nm of torque in the Scorpio and these figures are similar to what was churned out by the 2.2-litre engine too. Talking about the XUV500, the same engine belts out 140 HP of power and 320 Nm of torque. In comparison, the 2.2-litre engine produces the same power but 330 Nm of torque.
The updated engine will be offered on the Scorpio and XUV500 in Delhi only. The Scorpio is now priced between Rs. 9.67 – 12.75 lakhs while the XUV500 is priced between Rs. 11.58 – 15.51 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). The updated engines will be offered with only manual transmissions, i.e. 5-speed on the Scorpio and 6-speed on the XUV500.
Also, Mahindra will offer the engines only in 2WD trims and not in 4×4 or AWD trims for the Scorpio and XUV500 respectively. It is good to see that Mahindra acted swiftly and responded to the market’s needs by coming up with a smaller engine so quickly. Delhi is a very important market for the automaker and the Scorpio and XUV500 are hot-selling models.
