Tata Motors’ unfortunate naming clash with a deadly virus, might have pushed back the launch of the Tiago, but it’s back on track now, and even grander than before
The story of the Tata Tiago is a rather interesting one. It is developed as a hatchback to be positioned in between the Nano and Bolt, more so towards the latter. It was very well received by the critics, some even rating its handling above the Bolt. Then came the Zika, which led to a lot of confusion to the naming of the Zica, thus delaying the launch eventually.
Tata Motors finally arrived at a naming solution for the hatchback, by means of a public poll, and it was christened as the Tata Tiago. Well, things can only get better for Tata from here as production of the Tiago is in full flow at its Sanand plant. In fact, Tata had already manufactured 1800 units of the Tiago and counting.
Tata Motors has said that a launch date is seemingly near for the Tiago, and is in the last stage of completing all mandatory formalities. Previously, the Sanand plant would only manufacture the Nano, until it was joined by the Tiago. It’s surprising Tata has managed to keep the production up and running, in the wake of a 5 day long workers’ strike that has stalled the production of the Nano.
Tata is also in talks with the Gujarat government to obtain a similar incentive for the Tiago as it did with the Nano. Another reason that Tata opted for Sanand as the manufacturing home of the Tiago is that the plant is currently no where close to its full operational capacity due to the lack of demand for the world’s cheapest car.
