The new generation Volkswagen Beetle gets a brawny design language whilst retaining the curves and will be coming via the CBU route like most of its competition.
Hopes were high that the new generation Volkswagen Beetle will be heading to India soon after its global launch in 2011, especially after being showcased at the 2012 Auto Expo. However, the German automaker thought otherwise and decided to give the model a miss. After a gap of three years now, Volkswagen has decided to bring the new generation A5 Beetle to the country and has started accepting bookings for the model ahead of the official launch.
Volkswagen has started a dedicated website for booking the new Beetle (check it out HERE) while the car can be booked with selected dealers across the country with a token amount of Rs. 1 lakh. In terms of changes, the new generation model has made way for a bulkier and more masculine appeal instead of the cutesy appearance the model is known for. The curves are retained though. The new generation Beetle is based on the PQ35 platform sharing its underpinnings with the Jetta already on sale in the country.
Volkswagen has already revealed the specifications and features on the India spec Beetle with the hatchback powered by a 1.4-litre TSI motor producing 150 PS of power, paired to a 7-speed DSG gearbox. The car comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlamps with LED DRLs, keyless entry and push button start, panoramic sunroof, rear spoiler, ambient lighting with three options, leather interiors as well as chrome packages for the exterior and interior. You further get electrically retractable ORVMs, dual-zone climate control, touch-screen infotainment system, auto dimming IRVM and heated front seats.
The new generation Volkswagen Beetle is being offered in four body colours including white, blue, red and orange. Much like the previous generation model, the new version will coming in the country via the CBU route and is expected to command a premium price tag close to Rs. 35 lakhs (ex-showroom). The retro cool offering will be competing with the likes of the recently launched Abarth 595 Competizione, MINI Cooper S, Mercedes A-Class and BMW 1-Series.
