The Tivoli is available in both petrol and diesel engine options co-developed by SsangYong and Mahindra, and will be a compact SUV positioned between the TUV300 and Scorpio.

SsangYong Tivoli Launch South Korea
The SsangYong Tivoli has been imported with a 1.6-litre petrol engine

There have been a tonne of speculations related to SsangYong introducing the Tivoli compact SUV in the country, and it now seems the automaker is working on launching the model in India in the future. The Mahindra owned Korean giant has imported two units of the Tivoli in the country for R&D purposes with power coming from a 1.6-litre engine. If launched, the compact SUV will be locking horns with the Renault Duster, Maruti S-Cross and currently popular Hyundai Creta in the compact SUV segment.

Mahindra recently launched the TUV300 in the sub 4-metre compact SUV space while it retails the Scorpio in the same price bracket as the Duster and Creta. However, the SsangYong Tivoli emerges as a more urban looking product with a premium cabin and a host of technologies on offer. In terms of powertrain, the compact SUV uses 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines that have been co-developed by Mahindra and SsangYong that will make it on the parent company’s cars in the future.

In order to introduce the SsangYong Tivoli though, Mahindra will have to heavily localise the model in order to achieve a competitive price tag. Unlike the Rexton, SsangYong’s only offering in the country, the Tivoli will compete in a heavily contested space and the automaker needs to achieve an aggressive price tag to take on the established set of offerings.

All said, do not expect an immediate launch of the SsangYong Tivoli in the country. For now, Mahindra is concentrating on the TUV300 while the S101 (could be called XUV100) compact SUV will arrive by the end of the current financial year. This puts the SsangYong Tivoli’s launch ahead in the timeline and we could see the model arrive by late 2016 or in 2017.
