Maruti Suzuki is employing a mild hybrid technology to the Fiat sourced 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel engine in a bid to improve fuel efficiency and cut down emission levels.
Maruti Suzuki is certainly pushing in its new and concentrated strategy towards improving CO2 emissions and improving fuel efficiency levels on more of its vehicles. After surprising the masses with the new Ciaz Hybrid that will be launched next month followed by the Ertiga Hybrid, news now comes in that Maruti is planning to introduce the hybrid and AMT versions of the DZire diesel in the country this financial year. The hybrid technology will also be extended to the Swift hatchback that uses the same powertrain.
Essentially, the Maruti Swift and DZire models use a 1.3-litre DDiS diesel engine sourced from Fiat and the automaker is pushing in a new mild-hybrid technology into that engine that will help attain higher fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions without any significant lag in power. It has been reported that the new Ciaz diesel hybrid will be returning a fuel efficiency figure of 28 km/l and it is highly likely that the DZire diesel hybrid will surpass that figure.
Reports also suggest that Maruti Suzuki is testing the mild hybrid technology on the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol motor as well and could introduce the same later in the future. A closer look at these technologies is likely to be made visible at the 2016 Auto Expo while the launch on the production models is expected in the following months. Clearly, Maruti wants to retain the top spot and knows very well that better efficiency figures ensure high saleability. It will also be interesting to see these technologies that are otherwise restricted to premium cars making it to mainstream models.
