The third generation Skoda Superb is based on the MQB modular platform and will arrive in India next year. It will soon be joined by its cousin, the new Volkswagen Passat.
The Skoda Superb is one of the best sellers in its segment and keeping the sales momentum going strong, the Czech based automaker will be introducing the third generation version of the saloon in India next year. Ahead of the India launch though, two test mules of the new Superb were spotted in Aurangabad recently, where parent company Volkswagen’s assembly facility is located. Based on the MQB platform, the new generation model has grown in all aspects including space, luxury and performance. The CO2 emission and fuel consumption though are said to be reduced by 30 percent.
The 2016 Skoda Superb has grown by 47 mm in width while the wheelbase has increased by 80 mm. The overall length has been trimmed by 61 mm over the outgoing version. In terms of aesthetics, the saloon’s design takes inspiration from the VisionC concept with a coupe-like roofline and a sharply styled family grille up front. The rear gets the very Audi-ish LED tail lights that look striking. Inside the cabin, Skoda has maintained optimum levels of quality and the Superb comes with a host of goodies including Dynamic Chassis Control, automatic climate control AC, panoramic sunroof, rain and light sensors, MirrorLink app and a 610 Watt 12-speaker audio system.
Engine options comprise of 1.4-litre, 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre TSI petrol options with power figures ranging from 125 BHP to 280 BHP. Diesel power comes from a 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre TDI motors belting out 120 BHP and 190 BHP respectively. Most variants come with a dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission as standard. When launched in India, the saloon will continue with the 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre petrol options, while the new Bi-Turbo 2.0-litre TDI motor with 240 PS could also be made available. There are no V6 engines on offer this time.
Internationally, the Skoda Superb competes against the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Teana, Mazda6 and the upcoming Renault Talisman. The saloon has limited competition to face in India and continues to be the preferred choice of those who want to have fun in the driver’s seat while also enjoy the opulent rear space.
