The next generation Chevrolet Beat will be based on the existing platform but with comprehensive updates to the exterior and interior and is likely to get some bits from the all-new global Spark.

2016 Chevrolet Spark Unveil
The new gen Chevrolet Spark is based on the M2 platform that is a bit expensive for India

The next generation India-spec Chevrolet Beat (Spark globally) will be based on the outgoing platform, and will not employ the all-new M2 platform that made its debut on the recently unveiled 2016 Chevrolet Spark. Sources close to General Motors (GM) India stated that the American automaker has ruled out the possibility of bringing the new-generation 2016 Spark to India as the relatively modern M2 platform is turning out to be too expensive for our cost conscious market.

Instead, the next generation Chevrolet Beat will now be using the existing M300 platform but with several upgrades. The hatchback will also get a comprehensively redesigned exterior and interior, probably a little less radical one this time and with better rear seat space. That said, internal sources did hint that the new generation Beat will be using certain bits from the all-new global Spark with the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system most likely to be carried over.

Speaking of the powertrain, GM is using the new 1.4-litre petrol engine on the 2016 Chevrolet Spark, but the Indian model will continue with the 1.2-litre petrol motor to avail the small car excise duty benefits; while the 1.0-litre diesel engine will be retained as well. A time frame for launch is yet to be announced, but the report suggests that GM could bring the new model to the market by 2017 and is working to localise the hatchback extensively for a more cost effective price.

As part of its long term plans, GM is aiming to make India its global production hub for small cars and the same will help the company achieve higher economies of scale for the Beat as well as other products in the future. With the market stabilising once again, GM would not want to miss out on the growth opportunity this time around and needs to capitalise as much as possible with a better marketing strategy.
