The Maruti Swift Range Extender Hybrid was displayed in India at a couple of occasions in 2014. Just a couple of weeks back we carried an article about the company considering the launch of the hybrid vehicle. The latest news states that Maruti Suzuki is indeed planning to launch the Swift hybrid in India and it might make it to our markets by the end of this year or beginning of next year. The automaker will also look at the possibility of introducing the hybrid tech in the DZire compact sedan.

The Maruti Swift Range Extender is powered by a 658cc petrol engine that is matched to an electric motor connected to a 5 kWh lithium-ion battery. This combination of the engine and the electric motor gives out 73 PS of power and an amazing fuel efficiency of 48.2 km/l. The battery takes 90 minutes to charge and the car can run for a distance of 25.5 kms on pure electric power on a full charge. The Swift hybrid comes in 3 modes – hybrid, parallel hybrid and pure electric. Maruti had also displayed 10 units of the SX4 hybrid and 4 units of the Eeco electric vehicle during the Commonwealth Games.

Earlier there were no subsidies and concessions available for hybrids and electric vehicles, but in April 2015, our government introduced the Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of hybrid and Electric vehicles (FAME) scheme. The intention of this scheme is to give subsidies to people who buy hybrid or electric vehicles. The Maruti Swift Range Extender will be expensive thanks to the fact that its parts will be imported from Japan, but the vehicle will also be eligible for a discount of Rs. 1.2 lakhs.
