The fifth generation Audi A4 has grown longer and also gets a contoured bonnet over the outgoing version. It will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year.

The longer rear door hints towards a stretched wheelbase that will improve interior space

The next generation Audi A4 (B9) is all set to be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September this year and is currently undergoing its final phase of testing in Europe. Audi’s best-selling model globally, the 2016 A4 was recently caught during one of its test runs sans camouflage revealing the comprehensively redesigned mid-size luxury sedan. Evolved in every sense, the Ingolstadt based automaker has sharpened the strong lines from the outgoing version while the overall length has been increased which will translate into better cabin space.

Based on the new MLB platform, the 2016 Audi A4 gets a sharp front fascia featuring a six-point single frame grille and sleek headlights with the T-shaped LED daytime running lights. The bonnet has been contoured towards the front, which makes it appear longer. Moving to the sides, the biggest change is the sloping roofline that swoops downwards at the rear and seamlessly integrates with the boot. You also notice the larger rear door, courtesy of the grown wheelbase that will ensure improved ingress and egress. The sides also get a chrome bar on the lower section of the doors while the silver finished alloy wheels certainly look the part.

At the rear, the fifth generation Audi A4 has taken inspiration from the smaller A3 and gets similar but sharper looking LED tail lights. The boot-lid gets an integrated lip spoiler adding a sporty touch to the otherwise elegant looking sedan while the rear bumper features a stubby chrome bar which sits right above the blackened lower section. There is also a new chrome lining that starts from the corner of the headlight and runs across the shoulder line going up to the boot-lid.

While the interior could not be snapped, earlier spy shots of the 2016 Audi A4 show a clutter-free dashboard with a floating display unit and minimal switches on the centre console. The stubby gear lever comes from the new Q7. In terms of engine options, the all new A4 will be available in four petrol options namely 1.4, 1.8, 2.0, 3.0-litre TFSI motors while diesel duties will be performed by the 1.6, 2.0 and 3.0-litre TDI mills.

Transmission options will include the 6-speed manual and 9-speed automatic units while the Quattro system is likely to be offered as optional. Earlier reports also suggest that there will be hybrid versions of the A4, offering excellent fuel economy. Complete details of the all new A4 will be available later this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show while the Indian launch is expected a year later post the European debut.
