This is the second KTM 1290 Super Adventure to be imported in the country this year after a private import was found in March 2015.
Adventure tourers can be regarded as the next big segment in the Indian performance motorcycle space that will see splendid growth in the years to come. With more wanderers taking to the roads less conquered, more bike makers will be compelled to bring in their offerings to address the demand. At present, customers can choose from limited options including the Triumph Tiger Series, Ducati Hyperstrada and the offerings from Moto Morini among others. The much loved orange brand KTM too has several adventure tourers on sale internationally and import data suggests that its flagship tourer the ‘1290 Super Adventure’ has been imported for approval purpose in the country.
The 1290 Super Adventure is powered by a 1301cc liquid-cooled, 75-degree V-Twin engine that churns out 160 HP and 150 Nm of torque, paired to a 6-speed gearbox and is loaded with tech wizardry including traction control, multiple ride modes, cruise control, semi-active suspension, bar heaters, cornering lights, 12V sockets as well as electronic Hill Hold Control (HHC) and MSR (available as optional). The Adventure bike also gets Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, cornering ABS, MSC, among other features as part of safety tech.
KTM has no immediate plans to launch the 1290 Super Adventure or any other offering from its high-performance range in India. The manufacturer will instead concentrate on its existing set of products at present. Even if KTM does plan to bring the Adventure range to the country, the possibility is that the more sedate 1050 Adventure will hit the market first, priced around Rs. 13 lakhs while the flagship 1290 Super Adventure will be launched later, priced close to Rs. 20 lakhs (ex-showroom). Meanwhile, folks have been privately importing the 1290 Super Adventure in the country with another unit brought in March this year. If this too is a private import, KTM should seriously consider revising its strategy and launch its CBU/CKD products earlier.
