The 1.6-litre diesel engine is tuned to produce 120 HP of power, paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox and could be offered with AWD on the S-Cross.
Maruti Suzuki will be entering the compact SUV segment in the following weeks with its Renault Duster rivalling S-Cross/Across crossover and powering the same will be a 1.6-litre diesel engine. Confirming the same, Maruti has imported 1500 units the 1.6 MultiJet diesel engine in the country as per the latest import records. Showcased at the 2014 Auto Expo last February, the 1.6-litre motor is Fiat sourced and will be the largest diesel mill to be available on any Maruti vehicle.
Powering the top-end variants of the Maruti S-Cross/Across, the 1.6-litre MultiJet diesel engine is most likely to be available with 120 HP of power, paired to a 6-speed manual transmission. The crossover could also be available with Suzuki’s AllGrip All-Wheel Drive system. At present, Maruti will be importing the engine (which makes it a bit expensive) for the S-Cross alone but could later start assembling the same locally based on demand. This will also help the car maker to use the engine in its other offerings as well.
In addition to the 1.6 unit, the 2015 Maruti S-Cross will most likely be available with the 1.3-litre DDiS engine as well along with the 1.4-litre K-Series motor. The locally produced engines will help Maruti keep a low asking price on the S-Cross for the base variants. For the India-spec version, the crossover has been updated with a dual-slat chrome grille, projector headlights and LED DRLs. Earlier reports also suggested that the upcoming crossover will be available only in the VXi/VDi and ZXi/ZDi trims with the base LXi/LDi being given a miss. The S-Cross/Across is Maruti’s second premium offering in recent times, post the Ciaz sedan.
