The Suzuki Vitara comes with Autonomous Emergency Braking as standard that helped the crossover score higher points over other models in the test.
The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) released the results of its latest crash test session which included the Suzuki Vitara, Renault Espace, Fiat 500X and the Mazda2 cars. Scoring a major +1 for the Japanese manufacturer, the Vitara achieved a full five-star safety rating on the crash tests offering better protection than the Renault Espace that also scored full five stars. In contrast, the 500X and the Mazda2 were able to achieve only four stars at the Euro NCAP crash tests.
The Suzuki Vitara that is likely to come to India in the following years did better than the competition scoring 89 percent rating for adult occupant protection, 85 percent for child occupant, 76 percent for pedestrian and 75 percent for safety assist. In addition, the Suzuki crossover also received points for the Autonomous Emergency Braking system that has been included in Euro NCAP’s rating scheme since last year.
Coming extremely close to the Suzuki Vitara was the Renault Espace in providing safety and scored 82 percent for adult occupant protection, 89 percent for child occupant, 70 percent for pedestrian protection and 80 percent for safety assist. The frontal offset test concluded that the dashboard structures on the Espace presented a risk of injury on the passenger side while the side impact barrier test saw the rear driver’s side door open, which could result in the ejection of passengers.
The Fiat 500X gained healthy points across all the Euro NCAP tests scoring 85 percent for child occupant protection, 74 percent for pedestrian and 64 percent for safety assist but majorly lost out in the final ratings due to the autonomous emergency braking system not being offered as standard. The same applied for the Mazda2 as well and both the cars weren’t assessed for performance at low speeds in typical city driving.
