While the definition of the term ‘Fronx’ is not known yet, we do know that the YRA premium hatch will be powered by the 1.0-litre BoosterJet engine.
Planning to break the new Hyundai Elite i20’s success streak, Maruti Suzuki is working on the YRA (codename) premium hatchback that will go on sale around the festive season this year and is a global model that will be first launched in India. Now, a recent report suggests that the auto giant has christened the YRA as the ‘Fronx’ and the model was also caught testing most recently in heavy camouflage around Maruti’s facility.
Set to be positioned above the Swift, we are still not sure what to make of the term ‘Fronx’ as a few google searches regarding the term didn’t give us a satisfactory answer. Nonetheless, there are other things that we do know about the YRA/Fronx hatchback that surely sound interesting. The premium hatchback will be taking inspiration from the iK-2 concept that was showcased earlier this year at the Geneva Motor Show and has been designed with the emphasis on interior space and comfort resulting in a spacious cabin.
In terms of powertrain, the Maruti Suzuki YRA/Fronx will be powered by the 998cc BoosterJet engine that will come paired to manual and automatic transmission options. Apart from the new motor, the 1.2-litre K-Series engine and the 1.3-litre DDiS engine seen on the Swift at present will also power the premium hatchback, albeit in higher states of tune. The car will be loaded with creature comforts, as well as tech wizardry and the premium variants will ride on 16-inch alloy wheels. The Fronx will also compete against the Volkswagen Polo and the upcoming Honda Jazz, the latter due for a launch this June.
