The Audi RS6 Avant is a station wagon/estate variant based on the A6 sedan and offers 600 HP of power with a massively big boot.
In what seems to be a giant leap of faith towards offering performance in all shapes and sizes, Audi India has imported the RS6 Avant and the same could be launched in the following weeks in the country. Based on the Audi A6 Avant (there is no RS6 sedan although it was offered back in 2002 on the second generation A6), the RS6 Avant is the station wagon/estate derivative and comes with stupendous amounts of power coupled with a buttload of practicality, capable of carrying everything from bags to groceries without having to look bad while doing it. If launched, the RS6 Avant will command a price tag north of Rs. 1 crore (ex-showroom) in India.
The Audi RS6 Avant received a major facelift late last year and features a chiseled new front fascia and also the new arrow-head LED DRLs. Powering this mammoth of a station wagon is a 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 engine that belts out 560 HP of power and a whopping 700 Nm of torque, paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission that sends power to all four wheels via the Quattro system. In terms of performance figures, the RS6 Avant is capable of doing the run from naught to the ton in 3.9 seconds while the top speed is rated at 304 km/hr (with optional pack). Internationally, the Audi RS6 Avant competes with the Jaguar XFR-S Sportbrake and Mercedes E63 AMG Estate in the segment.
While the numbers are extremely impressive, launching the Audi RS6 Avant comes with the problem of finding the buyers for it. Station wagons have not really been a successful segment of cars in India with all past attempts (Tata Estate, Tata Indigo Marina, Skoda Octavia Combi) not panning out as hoped for the manufacturers. In the traditional mindset, customers will never relate a station wagon to performance as effectively as one would to a sedan. Nonetheless, if Audi is indeed planning to bring the model to India, it surely will be the first-of-its-kind offering in the country. The Ingolstadt based maker plans to launch 10 new models this year and will be launching the new generation TT on 23rd April.
