Hyundai is considering the feasibility of powering the Xcent with the 1.4-litre CRDI diesel engine from the Elite i20 and Verna.
Hyundai launched its compact sedan Xcent earlier this year. The Xcent is based on the Grand i10 hatchback and it is loaded with features that are found in vehicles a segment above. The Xcent is a pretty good package since it offers decent space, lots of equipment, great fit and finish and an impressive value-for-money proposition. The Xcent fights it out with the segment leader Maruti Swift DZire, Honda Amaze and the Tata Zest. The Xcent is powered by a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine and a 1.1-litre U2 CRDI diesel engine.
The 1.1-litre U2 CRDI diesel engine churns out 72 PS of power and 180 Nm of torque and the engine offers satisfactory drivability. It has now been rumoured that Hyundai is considering the possibility of introducing the 1.4-litre CRDI diesel engine in the Xcent. This engine is the same one that also powers the Elite i20 and the Verna from the same stable. The 1.4-litre unit produces 90 PS of power and 220 Nm of torque. It comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and a 4-speed automatic transmission.
If Hyundai does plonk in this bigger engine in the Xcent, then we cannot rule out the possibility of the compact sedan getting an automatic transmission too. Currently, the Zest is the only sedan in its segment to offer a diesel + AT option so it would be great if Hyundai could offer that too. As of now, the Hyundai Xcent diesel is priced from Rs. 5.62-7.44 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi) and with the addition of the bigger oil burner and maybe the automatic transmission, we can expect prices to go up by Rs. 20,000 – 35,000/-. Hyundai will continue to offer the smaller 1.1-litre diesel engine on the Xcent with the bigger 1.4-litre oil burner being reserved for either top-end models or just for the automatic variant.
