The Wagon R has been one of the most consistent selling products for Maruti Suzuki and is the second largest selling car for the automaker after the Alto.
One of its best selling models over the years, Maruti Suzuki has achieved yet another milestone with the Wagon R hatchback that crossed the 15 lakh sales mark in the domestic market this month. In a statement, the company stated that the Wagon R has been the choice of the ‘smart’ customer and consistently remains among India’s most loved car brands. First launched in 2000, the Wagon R had achieved the 10 lakh sales milestone in 2011 and 15 lakh sales comes within three years since, which only goes on to show the popularity of the hatchback in the country.
Maruti sold 1,56,300 units of the Wagon R in the 2013-14 fiscal, while in the current year sales have mounted to 93,000 units since April 2014. The month of October also saw the hatchback become the third best selling vehicle in the country with 14,310 units sold, doing consistently well. This year also saw the tall-boy hatchback record its highest monthly sales ever with 17,119 units sold in the month of June. The sheer practicality offering maximum cabin space coupled with frugalness of the engine has worked in favour of the hatchback.
The original tall boy, the Maruti Wagon R has had its share of updates and special editions that have kept the model fresh over the years. Most recently the company updated the hatchback with the new top-end Stingray edition offering aesthetic and feature upgrades over the regular model. Keeping up with times, Maruti is also working to update the Wagon R with an automated manual transmission (AMT) unit, much like the Alto as well as Celerio and will be available exclusively on the Stingray variant. With the AMT unit in place, Maruti is surely looking to achieve a new milestone in the coming years.
