The Swift will be updated with a new S variant offering more power from the 1.3-litre DDiS engine producing 90 PS along with a new set of features and will be positioned as the new top-end variant in the hatchback’s lineup
Maruti’s blue eyed boy, the Swift needs no introduction to Indian customers. With sales strong as ever, the Swift has needed little effort to sell itself in the domestic market. While the facelifted Swift has been on sale internationally for over a year now, India will be getting it later this year. Nonetheless making the wait worthwhile, the automaker has teased a new version of the hatchback that will be sportier, fun and definitely more powerful than the existing version.
Maruti has teased a new version called the ‘Swift S’ with the S denoting the sporty character of the hatchback. The Swift S is most likely to draw power from the same 1.3-litre DDiS engine that now gets a variable geometry turbocharger and will be tuned to produce 90 PS of power and 200 Nm of torque. The engine with the same output is also available in the Ertiga and the upcoming Ciaz and it only makes sense to offer the same in the Swift as well since the competition boasts of similar output. The 1.4-litre K-Series petrol mill could also make its way in the Swift offering around 95 PS of power but not in the immediate future as the bigger engine doesn’t comply with small car excise duty.
In its current form, the 1.3-litre DDiS engine produces 75 PS of power and 190 Nm of torque, while the 1.2-litre K-Series motor produces 87 PS of power. The new engines though will be limited to the top-end S variants only, while the other variants continue to get the existing powertrain. The Swift has always been seen as a sporty little hatchback but the Indian version was tuned to offer a little family oriented ownership coupled with the sportiness. Nonetheless, the new variants will be changing that with impressive power meeting overwhelming handling.
With the S variants launched, Maruti would be going the Volkswagen way with the latter offering regular and GT versions of the Polo. Expect a significant price difference for the S variant compared to the regular models, but the top-end Swift is expected to come loaded with new features to justify the high pricing. Maruti will introduce the updated Swift later in the year during the festive season with quite a few changes.
