General Motors world premiered the all-new generation 2016 Chevrolet Cruze earlier today at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show. The all-new Cruze has been designed from ground up using a brand new architecture along with design cues coming from the Chevrolet Tru Coupe Concept. GM states the new Cruze will set new benchmarks in the segment with improved fuel economy, handling and intelligent technology on board. Built in a joint venture between GM and Chinese partner SAIC, the all-new Cruze has been developed by the company’s global R&D team. A total of 37 vehicles are on display at GM’s pavilion at the Auto Show.
Being a major departure from the current generation model, the 2016 Cruze gets dual-mesh grille with swept back headlights. The side profile is sharper with the coupe like roofline, while the rear features tapered lines with a sporty tail light clusters. GM has also updated the exteriors with chrome garnish all-around for a more premium appeal on the sporty sedan. The new Cruze also features shorter overhangs, along with improved cabin space. Powering the 2016 Cruze are two new engines including the 1.4-litre turbocharged and the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated Ecotec engine options. The engines will be mated to an all-new 6-speed manual, 6-speed AMT and a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission, that has been co-developed by GM and SAIC.
GM states that the new engines offers 14-21 percent of improved fuel efficiency compared to the older engines. As confirmed earlier, the model unveiled is a China specific version and will differ from the North American version. The current generation Cruze will be sold alongside the new generation in China, albeit with new updates which has also been unveiled at the Beijing Motor Show. The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze will go on sale in China by the end of this year and competes with the likes of Toyota Corolla, Hyundai Elantra and Volkswagen Jetta.
