BMW has pulled the wraps off the much awaited X4, which is a compact version of the BMW X6. The similar Sports Activity Coupe silhouette is visible on the new BMW X4 but it has got some sharp styling cues and a sporty stance compared to the BMW X6, which intends to be fancy and flamboyant. Last year, BMW showcased the X4 in a concept guise and the Bavarian automaker managed to retain most of its styling on the production model. The front profile is derived from the new X3, boasting the seamless assembly of headlamps and grille.
Things get exciting from the side profile of the BMW X4, where the smart coupe-like roofline meets the rear. The side angle also reveals its compact dimensions. The BMW X4 has a raised tail with heavily sculpted bumper and striking tail lights. Considering the fact that it shares most of its elements with the BMW X3, you get a similar interior layout on the BMW X4. For that sporty appeal, the driver and front passenger sit 20 mm lower than the X3. Also the rear passengers don’t get as spacious layout as the X3 because of the steeply raked roofline.
The equipment list on the BMW X4 is similar to the BMW X3. The German automaker is offering a range of engine options with the BMW X4. The U.S. market gets the BMW X4 xDrive28i with a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder petrol unit producing 240 HP of power and the xDrive35i with a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder unit producing 300 HP of power, starting at $45,625 (Rs. 27.85 lakhs) and $48,925 (Rs. 29.86 lakhs) respectively. These engines will be mated to a 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with shift paddles.
The European market will get both petrol and diesel engine options including 2.0-litre turbo petrol unit (181 BHP and 242 BHP), 3.0-litre 6-cylinder turbo petrol (302 BHP) and three diesel engines that include 2.0-litre (187 BHP), 3.0-litre (255 BHP and 309 BHP). The M Performance version of the BMW X4 is likely to be introduced soon. The BMW X4 will make its public debut at the 2014 New York Auto Show next month. The BMW X4 will be introduced in the Indian market in 2015, where demand for such compact premium crossovers is on the rise.
