The company wants to capture every segment till the Rs. 40 lakhs mark.
Hyundai has never been a conservative company and has always given its customers good looking and feature rich cars. It enjoys a good following in India and this has given it a confidence boost to launch more new products in the existing and new segments. SUV market is on the rise and the company will soon have a portfolio with eight out of thirteen cars being utility vehicles.
The influx of Hyundai’s new SUVs will begin with the QXI. It is an entry-level compact SUV that will be under 4-metres in length. It is likely to have a tallboy design like the Maruti Ignis but will be slightly bigger in size. The Ignis will be tackled by a new micro-SUV from Hyundai. Placed above the QXI will be the Hyundai Carlino, test mule of which we showed to you only yesterday. The next generation Hyundai i20 Active is also set to go on sale in 2019.
The Hyundai Creta will continue to be in the compact SUV segment but will be replaced by the next generation model in 2019. It is currently the highest selling compact SUV in India. The company is also looking to introduce a 7-seater version of the same which has been codenamed the SU2i. Hyundai will try to revive Santa Fe that is already on sale globally. The Hyundai Tucson will continue to be offered and a 7-seater version codenamed the NX4i is also on the cards.
The Hyundai Tucson is also likely to be produced locally once the company’s Chennai plant expansion is fully completed. The most interesting out of these, however, has to be the Hyundai Kona that will actually be a hybrid vehicle. It may become the top of the line SUV in Hyundai’s India portfolio along with the 7-seater version of the Hyundai Tucson.
Every manufacturer in India has its eyes set on the local SUV market that has doubled in the last five years. This is further accentuated by the fact that the buyers too are more interested in getting a bigger vehicle. In all, over fifty new SUV, compact SUV and micro-SUV products are set to be introduced in India in the coming years. These will not only be better products in terms of looks but also will be more capable of tackling the broken Indian roads.
