The 25 top selling cars list for May 2018 sees the Creta become Hyundai’s best-seller.
May 2018 has been a slightly good month for the auto industry in India and the top 25 selling cars list for the same month has become more interesting. First off, the Creta becomes Hyundai’s best-seller by overtaking the sales of the Grand i10 and Elite i20. Second, Honda’s Amaze enters the top 25 selling cars list after a very long time. The new Amaze was launched last month and has already sold 9789 units. Maruti Dzire and the other rivals will surely be amazed at that! Third and the last, sales of the S-Cross have managed to surpass that of the Ignis and the Ciaz too. While the list above is self-explanatory, let us take you through the cars that couldn’t make it to this list.
Skoda continues to remain the underdog in the Indian car market. The Czech carmaker sold just 1420 units with the Rapid, Octavia and the Kodiaq contributing 870, 286 and 153 units respectively. FCA sold a total of 1567 units, of which 1518 units were contributed by the Jeep Compass. The Punto sold 40 units while the Linea managed just 9 units. German auto giant Volkswagen sold a total of 3108 units in May. The Polo, Vento and Ameo sold 1570, 545 and 900 units respectively while the premium segment cars like Tiguan and Passat managed to find 73 and 20 homes respectively.
Datsun’s redi-GO, GO and GO+ contributed 2067, 393 and 425 units respectively to Nissan’s total sales of 3569 units. The company’s own Micra sold 400 units, Sunny sold 133 units and the Terrano managed just 151 units in May 2018. French carmaker Renault registered total sales of 6732 units with the Kwid contributing over 75% to the total sales. The Captur’s sales are yet to take off while the Lodgy and the Duster managed to sell 166 and 1046 units respectively.
American auto major Ford sold a total of 9069 units. The Figo’s sales see a drastic downfall while the Aspire, Freestyle and the Endeavour registered sales of 601, 3027 and 351 units respectively. Toyota’s Liva and Etios sold 866 and 1131 units respectively while the Corolla, Fortuner and Camry registered sales of 264, 1902 and 26 units respectively. The Yaris is the third highest selling mid-size sedan in India. It managed to find 2843 homes in May 2018 and outsold the Honda City. Honda’s Brio and Jazz sold 183 and 680 units respectively while the BR-V managed to sell 469 units last month. Sales of the City (at 2763 units) and the WR-V (at 1962 units) are slightly down as well.
Homegrown automaker Tata Motors sold a total of 17,489 units in May 2018 with the Tiago, Nexon and the Tigor being the highest contributors. The Tigor and Zest sold 3071 and 1178 units respectively while the Bolt, Safari Storme and the Hexa respectively managed to sell 187, 304 and 814 units. Mahindra’s Scorpio (with 3775 units sold) and Bolero continue to rake in the volumes for the company. Besides them, the automaker sold 1481 units of the KUV100, 653 units of the Xylo, 1939 units of the TUV300 and 2770 units of the XUV500.
Hyundai has slightly more than 15% of market share in the domestic passenger car market in India and that makes it the second highest car manufacturer in terms of sales. The Korean carmaker sold a total of 45,008 units in May as opposed to 46,735 units in April 2018. Apart from the Gypsy, Maruti Suzuki has all its thirteen models in the top selling list and that tells us how popular its cars are in India. The carmaker holds a market share of over 54% in India.
