Hyundai Reveals The Next-Gen Nexo FCEV, Targets 700 km Of Range In Just 5 Minutes

Hyundai has revealed the second-generation of the Nexo SUV at the Seoul Mobility Show 2025. The Hyundai Nexo is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell and follows the brand’s ‘Art Of Steel’ design philosophy. The innovative SUV targets 700 km of range from just a 5-minute charge.

Styling

The Hyundai Nexo is based on the 2024 Initium concept and has various styling cues that differentiate it from the EVs and ICE cars in the Hyundai lineup. It shares a lot of design details with the previous generation Nexo. The SUV has grid-shaped ‘HTWO’ (Hydrogen for Humanity) headlights and tail lights.

The next-generation Nexo will be available in 6 colours: Creamy White Pearl, Phantom Black Pearl, Amazon Grey Metallic, Ocean Indigo Matte, and Goyo Cooper Pearl. The latter shade is inspired by Korea’s nature and culture, and the name ‘Goyo’ means ‘serene’ or tranquil’. The paint is processed in a three-coat process, creating a multi-dimensional effect, which shifts colour depending upon the angle of the light and environment.

Powertrain Details

The Hyundai Nexo is powered by a 2.64 kWh battery and a 6.69 Kg hydrogen tank. It produces 204 HP and 350 Nm of torque, which is higher as compared to the first-generation Nexo. It goes from 0-100 km/hr in just 7.8 seconds, compared to the 9.2 seconds previously. The small battery has an output of 80 kW. The hydrogen tank allows for a range of 700 km, based on Hyundai’s internal testing.

Interior

The interior of the Nexo is spacious and luxurious. It gets a dual 12.3-inch infotainment system and driver display, similar to the ones seen in the Hyundai IONIQ 5. The dashboard has two screens at the end, in order to view the video feed from mirror-mounted cameras, replacing regular ORVMs.

Features

The Nexo is also equipped with a head-up display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Over-The-Air Updates, a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen Audio System, a wireless charger and Vehicle-To-Load (V2L) capability. The seats are slimmer to incorporate more space for occupants. There is also the presence of sustainable materials like bio-processed leather, recycled PET fabric, and linen fabric.

Safety Features

The Hyundai Nexo was the first SUV to receive 5 stars in the Euro NCAP crash test program and a Top Safety Pick award from the IIHS in 2018. The new generation Nexo targets excellent safety ratings as well. Structurally, the Nexo uses hot stamping and high-strength steel materials as well as a multi-skeleton body to improve rigidity. The Nexo also features 9 Airbags and ADAS, aiding safety.

Outlook

Hyundai has said that the Nexo will come to global markets later in 2025. Hyundai has previously showcased the Nexo at the 2020 Auto Expo and the 2018 India-Korea Business Summit. However, the lack of Hydrogen Fuel Stations and infrastructure challenges the SUV’s feasibility in our conditions. It is important to note that the Korean brand is conducting a feasibility study on the Fuel Cell Electric Vehicles (FCEV) in India, so there is some hope regarding the Hyundai Nexo in India.
