2025 BMW M5 gets plug-in hybrid tech with its 4.4-litre V8 twin-turbo engine

BMW has introduced the latest generation of its M5 performance oriented luxury sedan, now featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain. This upgrade makes the new M5 the most powerful iteration in the model’s history.

The 2025 BMW M5 retains the familiar 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine but incorporates an electric motor within the 8-speed automatic transmission, a setup similar to that of the BMW XM SUV. The V8 engine alone produces 585 HP, while the electric motor adds 199 HP, bringing the total system output to an impressive 727 HP and 1001 Nm of torque. This power is delivered to all four wheels via BMW’s M xDrive rear-biased all-wheel-drive system.

Despite the additional weight of the motor and battery, which makes the new M5 about 500 kg heavier than its predecessor at approximately 2.4 tonnes, the car can accelerate from 0-100 km/hr in 3.5 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/hr but this can be increased to 305 km/hr with the optional M Driver’s Package. The 18.6kWh battery pack offers an electric-only range of 67-69 km as per the WLTP cycle, with a maximum speed of 140 km/hr in all-electric mode. The vehicle supports AC charging up to 7.4kW.

The new M5 comes equipped with a host of advanced features. These include the latest iteration of BMW’s Curved Display, a flat-bottomed M leather steering wheel with illuminated M buttons, M multifunction seats with electric adjustment, head-up display, 4-zone automatic climate control, Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System, wireless charging tray and M light alloy wheels (20-inch front, 21-inch rear) fitted with high-performance tyres.

In the UK, the new generation BMW M5 is priced from £110,500 (Rs. 1.17 crores). Deliveries are scheduled to begin later this year. While there is no official announcement regarding its launch in India, it is expected to arrive next year. Currently, BMW is focusing on the launch of the standard 5 Series in India, which is set to go on sale next month.
