2024 BMW 5 Series will be offered in LWB variants for the Indian market
BMW is set to introduce the new 5 Series Long Wheelbase (LWB) in India on 24th July, marking the debut of this variant in the Indian market. This launch positions BMW to directly compete with the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB.
The latest generation BMW 5 Series LWB measures 5175 mm in length, 1900 mm in width and 1520 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3105 mm. Compared to the standard 5 Series sedan, the LWB version is 145 mm longer, with 110 mm of this added length enhancing the wheelbase. These dimensions are based on the model sold in China, though the Indian version may feature specific adaptations such as a right-hand drive configuration and slightly increased ground clearance.
The design of the new 5 Series LWB closely mirrors that of the standard model, with the extended length being the most noticeable difference. Unlike the Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB, which has a distinct quarter glass and door design, the 5 Series LWB retains the rear door design of the standard model without an additional rear quarter glass. The car also features similar headlamp and tail lamp designs, along with an illuminated grille. Certain variants may include subtle modifications to the front and rear bumpers. In China, the 5 Series LWB is distinguished by an illuminated ‘5’ on the C-pillar, though this feature is not present on the standard 5 Series.
In terms of features, the 5 Series LWB in China comes equipped with features including 4-zone climate control, quilted upholstery and a dual-tone interior design. A standout feature is the 31.1-inch display that folds down from the headliner, offering 8K resolution and 5G compatibility. This screen, coupled with a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system, provides an immersive entertainment experience. It is anticipated that many of these features will be available in the Indian version of the car as well.
The introduction of the 5 Series LWB makes it the second LWB sedan offering from BMW in India, following the 3 Series Grand Limousine, which was launched a few years ago. The new 5 Series LWB aims to carve out a niche in the premium sedan market, directly challenging the upcoming all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class LWB, which is also expected to be released later this year.
