Rolls-Royce has unveiled the 2021 Ghost and the first thing that comes to mind is that although it might be a magnificent thing to behold, it could not have come during the wrong time.
Nonetheless, the luxury brand has decided not to bother with any mention of the pandemic and has gone on to replace its most successful model, the previous generation Ghost, with a new, ermmm, Ghost.
This model is new, like really new, with the only carryover items being the Spirit Of Ecstasy and umbrellas. Made using the brand’s modular aluminium chassis, the car’s design is also different and takes more than a design cue from the Phantom.
The grille is smaller than the larger models from the manufacturer’s range, there are laser headlights (with 600 m illumination range) with DRLs, larger air dam, while the shoulder lines and angles are like latest cars from the brand. At the rear, we can spot the revised taillights which complete the design change.
But really, the design is not that too different and that might be because Rolls-Royce listens to its customers and we think they might not have wanted something too radical.
Inside, the dash is just opulent. The wide, uncluttered dash gets open-pore wood trim, while other finishes are available. Since it is a car that is aimed at keeping people comfortable, it does not get 104-inch display and touchscreen everything.
Instead, it is a more serene dash to look at, what with there being a dazzling spray of 850 stars to form a constellation, lit by 152 LEDs, echoing the starlight headliner.
Although it is a very quiet car, the 2021 Rolls-Royce Ghost has 100 kg sound insulation, one can bring the concert inside should they wish, since its audio system has a 1300 Watt output, with the sound emanated through 18 speakers.
Powering the new Ghost is a 6.75-litre twin-turbo V12 that makes 563 BHP and 850 Nm, the latter available from just 1600 RPM. Power is sent to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic gearbox.
Despite weighing 2490 kg, Rolls-Royce states that the Ghost can do the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 4.8 seconds while going on to hit a top speed of 250 km/hr.
It also gets all-wheel steering, trick air-suspension that we have already reported about, among other latest tech to offer its owners a smooth and unruffled ride.
Finally, the price, which is not something we can say for sure. Yes, Rolls-Royce asks $311,900 (Rs. 2.27 crores), but with customers expected to personalise the car to suit their tastes and needs, that price would sure head upwards. India launch expected in early 2021.
