2021 Renault 5 Prototype Revealed, Electric Showcar Rocks With Retro Looks

It has plenty of nice design elements

The 2021 Renault 5 Prototype has been revealed and it is heavily inspired by the manufacturer’s supermini called the, ermm, Renault 5, that was on sale overseas from the 70s till the 90s.

It is part of the French brand’s “Renaulution” plan under which it plans to launch 7 new electric vehicles by 2025 and the reincarnated Renault 5 has a major role to play in it.

While it looks like Renault’s design director was given the task of taking the old hatchback and reimagining it with some modern lighting and wheels, there is actually more to the car than meets the eye at first.

Take the lights of the 2021 Renault 5 Prototype for instance, they are LED units, with the front fog lights acting as DRLs, while the rear lighting unit features aero flaps.

On the bonnet, there is an offset intake that hides the charging hatch, while the logos now light up and as a nice touch, the French flag is on the ORVMs.

Being a prototype, the car also has a textile roof panel, and it is possible that some of these features might not make it to the production version.

No image of the interior has been revealed as of yet, but Renault did say the car features a small transparent screen on the dash that can project messages for people to read from outside the vehicle.

I would think it could be used to advertise one’s company or tell the neighbours not to let their dog splash its “mark” on the vehicle when it is left outside briefly, or something like that.

Similarly, the carmaker did not reveal any details about the car’s electric powertrain. So, the range, charging capacity and the kilowatts its engine has is not known.

When the 2021 Renault 5 Prototype is put into production, it will be joined by the Renault 4, which is another iconic nameplate from the carmaker. They should help the firm achieve its goal of having EVs contribute to 30 percent of its sales by 2025.

Being an EV, interior space would be generous even if it is just a city car
