2021 Hyundai i20 Revealed In Official Video, Manufacturing Process Explained

Hyundai has released an official video of the manufacturing process of 2021 i20, showcasing its state-of-the-art facility situated in Chennai.

Named the “Origins Story”, the video shows the processes that take place at the 540 acre manufacturing plant housing over 650 fourth generation robots and 14,000 employees at Chennai in Tamil Nadu, to produce the all-new i20.

The whole manufacturing process starts at the press shop where panels are stamped and the resultant parts are checked for quality using a digital gauge and 3D scanning tool.

Then comes the body line which uses 450 self-learning robots ensuring 100 percent welding automation. Each car has over 4000 welding spots and 70 cars are processed every hour.

Hyundai says the 2021 Hyundai i20 manufacturing process ensures that the car has 13 percent more tensile strength than its predecessor adding that the chassis of the car is made from 66 percent high-strength steel.

Once the body is made, the car enters the paint booth, where 72 robots are present and where “High Throw Power Seventh Generation Electro Deposition Paint” is used.

While all this takes place, Hyundai also works on the powertrain. All of the engines (made using 700 CNC machines) undergo cold-testing, while the Endurance Lab tests the gearbox for 849 hours (with load) and the engines for over 350 hours.

All of these components then come together at the assembly line and upon completion, the cars are checked for quality digitally and by using quality experts.

Finally, after a dynamic road test on 18 drive tracks that resemble various road conditions and a leak test, the 2021 Hyundai i20 manufacturing process wraps up.

Set to be launched in early November, the latest i20 will come with multiple engine and gearbox options and latest features. It will rival the Tata Altroz, Maruti Suzuki Baleno and Honda Jazz when it hits the market and is expected to be priced around Rs. 6-10 lakhs (ex-showroom).
