Porsche has launched the 718 Spyder with a price tag of Rs. 1.59 crores and the Cayman GT4 at Rs. 1.63 crores (both prices ex-showroom) in India.
The new additions to the 718 model family have been created by Porsche’s GT division, making them the entry point to the road-going GT line-up that is topped by the GT2 RS.
Shunning the modern trend of adopting smaller turbocharged motors, the 718 Spyder and the Cayman GT4 get a new 4.0-litre flat-six engine from Porsche’s new 9A2 Evo engine family. It puts out 414 BHP and 420 Nm and is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and both cars can do the 0-100 km/hr sprint in 4.4 seconds.
Both cars get Porsche Stability Management, Porsche Torque Vectoring with mechanical rear differential lock, Porsche Active Suspension Management that reduces the ride height by 30 mm over the regular variants and race inspired chassis.
Also similar is the option to have the ceramic braking set-up alongside the track-focused aluminium mono-bloc fixed-caliper system and even the Michelin tyres are the same.
But there are differences between to the two models. Apart from the Porsche 718 Spyder price being lower than the Cayman GT4 and manually operated roof, it also has a lower top speed of 301 km/hr.
The car gets a rear spoiler that automatically rises at 120 km/hr and is the first model from the Boxster family to generate downforce over the rear axle, all thanks to its diffuser.
For the Cayman GT4, Porsche claims to have comprehensively improved the car’s aerodynamic efficiency. It is now said to produce up to 50 percent more downforce than its predecessor, that too without having a negative effect on drag.
Other notable features include a more compact rear silencer, a functional diffuser that increases downforce by 30 percent at the rear and a fixed rear wing which is 20 percent more efficient.
Bookings are open for both models and we hope that those who have deep pockets buy these cars and rip them around race tracks and not keep them as garage queens.
