The new Thar will be bigger and safer than the current model.
A camouflaged test mule of the second generation Mahindra Thar was spotted testing for the first time. The first generation Thar was launched in 2010 and is due for a replacement. In its current avatar, the Thar won’t be able to meet the upcoming crash test norms and BS6 emission standards. Hence Mahindra has begun road testing the second generation model.
To meet the upcoming crash test norms, the 2020 Mahindra Thar is expected to be based on a new and bigger ladder frame chassis, we believe it to be the same modular unit that is used to underpin both the TUV300 and Scorpio. It will also come with safety features like ABS and airbags, finally!
The spy shots suggest that the new Thar would be significantly wider than the existing model. The new Thar manages to look as big as the Renault Duster parked in the car’s vicinity. Apart from the size, the image reveals that the Thar is in its early stages of development. The test mule features dummy lights, canopy and smaller wheels.
Powering the Mahindra Thar would be the latest iteration of the 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine that will meet BS6 emission norms. Like before, the new Thar would be offered with a manually shifting 4WD system with locking rear differentials. A shift-on-fly system would be expensive and Mahindra will be looking at a competitive pricing with the new generation model.
The 2020 Mahindra Thar will have the same Jeep CJ5-inspired styling as it is quite apparent in the spy images. More refined design elements like rounded edges can be expected. Mahindra may seek advice from Pininfarina and SsangYong for the design of the Thar.
The next generation Mahindra Thar will continue to rival just the Force Gurkha as Suzuki is unlikely to bring the Jimny to India due to the lack of a diesel engine. Expect more news on the new Thar as testing continues.
