Euro NCAP has crash tested the 2020 Land Rover Defender and has provided the off-roader a 5-star safety rating.
The car that was tested was a Defender 110 2.0-litre diesel SE variant (right-hand drive) and it scored 85 percent for both adult and child occupant protection, 79 percent for safety assist and 71 percent for pedestrian safety.
According to Euro NCAP, the 2020 Land Rover Defender’s passenger compartment remained stable in the offset frontal test. The score for the frontal offset test was reduced due to the vehicle’s high mass (test car weighed 2408 kg) and rigid front structure making it an aggressive partner to a colliding vehicle.
Since it comes with 6 airbags, protection was good or adequate for all passengers (except rear passenger chest) in the rigid wall test, while maximum points were scored by the car in the side barrier and side pole impact tests.
When it comes to child occupant protection (up to 3 ISOFIX mounting points are available), the test results show that in both the frontal offset test and the side barrier impact, protection of both child dummies was good for all critical parts of the body.
Similarly, the SUV did well when it comes to pedestrian safety and the response of the Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system (that comes as standard) was found to be adequate for pedestrians and good for cyclists and collisions were mitigated in most cases.
As standard, the Defender comes with driver assistance systems such as Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Assist, 3D Surround Camera, Clear Exit Monitor, Adaptive Cruise Control, Driver Condition Monitor, among many others.
These results have been extended to the entire Land Rover Defender range, making the SUV once of the safest cars people can purchase today.
