2019 Maruti Alto Could Use A 660cc Engine

2016 Maruti Alto 800 Review

The next generation Maruti Alto is expected to be rolled out by the end of 2019 and could likely come with a smaller 660cc engine.

The next generation Alto will be lighter and more fuel-efficient

Maruti is working on the next generation Alto for the domestic market and it is expected to get a smaller, more fuel-efficient and more powerful 660cc engine in addition to the 800cc variant. The hatchback is expected to be rolled out by the end of 2019.

This new 660cc engine will comply with BS6 emission norms and will be based on an all-new lightweight platform which will also underpin the 800cc variant. The next generation Alto will be lighter, more fuel-efficient, more powerful and faster than the current generation model.

Due to the massive infusion of latest technology into this 660cc engine, it is expected to command an equivalent or a slightly higher sticker price than the current generation model. In spite of having a market share of 45 percent in the country’s passenger car market, some small cars like the Renault Kwid and Tata Tiago have been giving tough competition to Maruti’s offerings. However with the launch of the next generation Alto, the automaker is likely to fight back strongly.

Maruti has already commenced working on the next generation Alto codenamed Y1K at its R&D centre in Rohtak in association with its parent company Suzuki in Japan. While the platform development for the next generation Alto is said to happen at Japan, the engineering and design will be done in India.
