2018 saw good sales across the board, with Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai still staying at the top.
2018 was a fantastic year for the Indian auto industry. There were numerous launches and many facelifts giving buyers a wide range of options. Despite the growing competition Maruti Suzuki still managed to make it their year with 6 cars still at the top!
The Dzire was the best selling car in 2018 with 2,64,212 units sold, an almost 18 percent rise compared to the 2017 numbers. The Maruti Alto came in at the second position with 2,56,661 units sold making it India’s best selling hatchback. The Maruti Vitara Brezza sold 1,55,466 units ahead of all the compact SUVs.
Hyundai too racked up decent numbers with the Elite i20 being on top with 1,41,104 units, an increase of a modest 5.2 percent. The Grand i10 came in second in the Hyundai line-up with a fall of 13.25 percent in sales. The facelift of the Hyundai Creta was launched this year and it saw a rise of 14.62 percent in sales as Hyundai sold 1,20,905 units of the SUV.
The Tata Nexon which was launched in September 2017 was off to a good start with 14,062 units sold in 2017. In 2018 Tata sold 52,519 units of the Nexon recording the sales growth of a whopping 273 percent. An automatic transmission and an exceptional 5-star safety score in Global NCAP might have been the reasons for the Nexon’s growing popularity. The Tiago continued to be Tata’s best selling car with 92,286 units sold recording an almost 30 percent growth.
The Renault Kwid saw a decline of 28 percent as the company managed to sell 66,815 units of the hatchback. Maruti sold 50,759 units of the Ciaz, a decline of 18 percent. Mahindra Scorpio and Honda City were down by 5.83 percent and 32.81 percent respectively.
2018 was also a great year for most luxury brands. Mercedes-Benz refused to give up the top spot with 15,538 units sold. BMW came in the second spot with 11,105 units sold, recording a growth of 13 percent. Volvo posted a record sales of 2638 units, a 30 percent rise over 2017 figures. The SUV range, especially the XC60 and the XC40 did very well for the company. Audi showed a decline and slipped to the third position with 6463 units sold.
