Triumph is planning to launch the 2017 Tiger Explorer in India this month.
Back in 2013, Triumph Motorcycles made its way to India with an array of premium motorcycles with prices ranging from Rs. 5.7 lakhs to Rs. 20 lakhs (ex-showroom, Delhi). Of the ten motorcycles on offer, the Thunderbird, Rocket III and Tiger series were imported as CBUs. The rest were imported as CKD units and assembled at Triumph’s plant in Manesar. Now, the company is planning to launch the 2017 Tiger Explorer XCx in India.
The Tiger Explorer is a dual-sport bike which boasts of an upright riding position, tall windshield and high ground clearance. Built on a tubular trellis frame, the 2017 Tiger Explorer sports upside down forks, rear mono suspension and hydraulic assist clutch. Apart from cruise control (also available in current version), the 2017 version gets several rider enhancements and ride-by-wire technology as well. These attributes, in addition to a powerful motor, make it a proper adventure tourer.
The 2017 Triumph Tiger Explorer is powered by a retuned version of the 1215cc, in-line 3-cylinder engine which powers the current Tiger Explorer. The Euro IV compliant engine, which comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox, now makes 137 HP of peak power and 123 NM of torque. Triumph’s Semi Active Suspension (TSAS) and other electronic aids like traction control, cornering ABS and different rider modes also make their way to the 2017 version. Road, Rain and Off-Road are the three riding modes on offer. Assisted by an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit), these modes monitor and control the suspension, ABS and traction control settings depending on the load and terrain.
The 2017 Tiger Explorer is already on sale in other countries in different variants but the Indian market is likely to get only the XCx variant. Since the bike will be imported as a CBU, it will attract more taxes and the prices will shoot up. Currently, we expect the bike to be priced at Rs. 21 lakhs (ex-showroom). The 2017 Tiger Explorer will compete with the likes of Ducati Multistrada 1200S and BMW R 1200GS, in spite of being priced higher than them.
