The 2017 Mercedes E-Class shares its new styling and underpinnings with the W222 S-Class while the interiors have moved a notch higher in offering best-in-class luxury.
Having teased the tenth generation E-Class through countless images and videos online, Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed the 2017 E-Class sedan globally that will be making its official public debut at the Detroit Motor Show on 11th January. Ahead of the reveal, the images emerged online, revealing every detail that you need to know about the all-new model which not only adopts the German automaker’s lighter and sophisticated MRA platform but also the design language seen on the S-Class and C-Class.
On the outset, the new generation Mercedes E-Class gets the codename W213 and has grown by 43 mm in length to a total of 4923 mm while the wheelbase has grown by 65 mm to a total 2939 mm. The styling as evident is in-line with the automaker’s new models and is a mix between the sportier new generation C-Class and W222 S-Class flagship saloon. The 2017 E-Class though mixes things up retaining the grille similar to the outgoing model while the Multibeam headlights are all-new followed by the sloping roofline and petal shaped LED tail lights.
Inside the cabin, the 2017 Mercedes E-Class has mimicked a host of details from the S-Class adding to the classy quotient of the saloon. There are two 12.3-inch displays dominating the dashboard with three themes – Classic, Sport and Progressive; and replaces the analog instrument cluster setup. However, the base models will get an analog dial with an MID unit in the centre. Further, the tech bits include the wireless charging mat for smartphones, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, the touchpad controller, new COMAND system among others.
Engine options have not been officially revealed yet but the 2017 Mercedes E-Class lineup will include a 2.0-litre turbocharged, four-cylinder petrol as well as a newly developed 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel motor good for 195 PS of power. In addition, a host of turbocharged four-cylinder and six-cylinder mills will be available while a plug-in hybrid version will be offered on the E350 e drawing power from 2.0-litre petrol motor paired to an electric drivetrain producing a combined power output of 279 PS.
Coming to the AMG powered models, the 2017 Mercedes E63 AMG and ‘S’ range will get a revised 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol mill good for 600 HP that will arrive later this year. Transmission duties include the new 9G Tronic automatic transmission as standard across the range, save for the AMG models which continue with the 7-speed SpeedShift gearbox. Power will be sent to the rear wheels on most variants while some will get the 4MATIC AWD system to keep things controlled.
Lastly, the new Mercedes E-Class will feature three different suspension adjustability settings including the optional air suspension with electronically controlled adjustable damping. You can also lower the setup by 15 mm for Avantgarde models and opt for a stiffer and sporty tuning with adaptive dampers. The 2017 Mercedes E-Class will be hitting the European market later in the year while its Indian launch can be expected by the end of 2016 or early next year.
