Amidst all the uncertainty regarding the Fortuner’s future, the second generation Toyota Fortuner was spotted in camouflage in Bangalore recently. The international spec model is the one set to make it to the Indian market.
The Toyota Fortuner has been a significant cog in the brand’s success in India. It took a significant blow when the dark cloud surrounding the diesel ban in India started taking shape. But now, the rumour mill has been assigned fresh work after the second generation Toyota Fortuner was seen testing in Bangalore in a camouflaged masquerade.
Toyota had imported the new Fortuner in October 2015 for Research and Development processes, but is now keen on launching the SUV for the domestic market. The latest Fortuner made its debut in Thailand last year and has been speculated about a lot to make it to the sub-continent.
The diesel motors powering the 2016 Toyota Fortuner come in two variants, the 2.4-litre and the meatier 2.8-litre that respectively produce 148 BHP and 175 BHP of power. Peak torque values clock at 400 and 450 Nm of twist. The power will be transmitted to the rear wheels on the entry-level SUV and to all 4 wheels on the top-end. Both 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic gearbox options will be made available.
On the outside, significant improvements are seen with the chrome grille, LED DRLs, 18-inch alloy wheels, while the inside gets Traction Control System (TCS), Down Hill Assist Control system, to name a few. Production of the SUV will be undertaken at the company’s Karnataka facility and is touted to be priced around Rs. 28 lakhs in India on release.
