American motorcycle manufacturer UM Motorcycles made its India debut at the 2014 Auto Expo showcasing a slew of products. The motorcycle range consists of street bikes, cruisers, scooters, dual-purpose motorcycles in the 100cc to 250cc range. The Miami based company recently unveiled its top of the line 2015 Hypersport bike which might be launched in India in the near future.
The 2015 Hypersport boasts a dual-purpose on-off road styling. The bike looks radically appealing and has a sporty look and feel to it. The bike measures 2075 mm in length, 780 mm in width and 1255 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 1325 mm. The front floating mudguard and the raised exhaust muffler give it the right dual-purpose look. The flat seat should offer decent cushioning. The bike looks brawny with the blackened engine and the side fairings while the 10-spoke design aluminium alloys adding to the sporty appeal.
The Hypersport uses a single-cylinder, 4-stroke engine with three displacements namely 124cc, 199cc and 223cc. The base air-cooled 124cc engine produces 10.45 HP of power at 8500 RPM and 9 Nm of torque at 8000 RPM. The 199cc engine on the other hand produces 14.75 HP of power at 7500 RPM and 15 Nm of torque at 6000 RPM; whereas the top of the line air and oil-cooled 223cc engine is capable of producing 17.27 HP of power at 8000 RPM and 16.86 Nm of torque at 4000 RPM. All the 3 engines are paired to a 5-speed transmission.
The suspension comes with 775 mm long telescopic hydraulic forks in the front and a hydraulic monoshock with spring setup at the rear. The 124cc model rides on 110/70/15 and 120/70/15 tyres, while the 199cc and 223cc engined bikes receive 110/70-17 and 130/70-17 tyres at the front and rear respectively. Stopping power comes from hydraulic ventilated discs in the front and rear on all the variants.
The 2015 Hypersport comes loaded with electronic performance and safety features from the company. UM’s exclusive SAM system (System Auto Maintenance) indicates when auto maintenance is required, whereas an intermittent anti-theft light prevents the bike from theft. You also get BSM (Blind Spot Mirrors) which provide greater visibility, especially when changing lanes. The tyres are equipped with AFS (Anti-Flat Sealant) which prevents punctures from external elements. The Hypersport has also been incorporated with 37 built-in LED bulbs into the headlamp, tail lamp and fuel tank giving a complete 360-degree illumination at night.
The American company plans to start full operations in India soon and is in the process of setting up its own manufacturing plant, while an R&D centre is scheduled for the future. Even though the company hasn’t divulged on the prices for the Hypersport, expect it to be at certain premium over the regular bikes in the segment, thanks to number of electronic tech available on the models. Considering most of these features would be a segment first for Indian bikes, it is a welcome move from UM Motorcycles.
