Ahead of the global unveil at the Paris Motor Show in October this year; Skoda Auto has officially revealed the engine lineup of the 2015 Fabia hatchback and is said to be 17 percent more fuel efficient than the outgoing model. The automaker will have four petrol and one diesel engines on offer, while an eco-friendly diesel variant will be launched later in the product lifecycle. Skoda states that the next generation Fabia is 65 kgs lighter than its predecessor and the base variant weighs only 980 kgs.
Based on the MQB platform, the 2015 Skoda Fabia will use the 1.0-litre 3-cylinder MPI engine and the 1.2-litre 4-cylinder TSI motor with outputs ranging from 60 PS to 110 PS. The diesel engine lineup includes the 1.4-liter 3-cylinder, common rail, direct injection TDI motor with an aluminium block and is available in three states of tune ranging from 75 PS to 105 PS of power. All variants will be fitted with start-stop system and kinetic recuperation system (KERS) as standard, while the transmission options include a manual as well as DSG automatic double-clutch gearbox. The Czech based automaker has discontinued the 1.6-litre TDI unit internationally.
Skoda also has an eco-friendly ‘GreenLine’ version of the next generation Fabia that will be launched in late 2015. The GreenLine version is powered by the same 1.4-litre TDI engine producing 75 PS of power and uses optimized low rolling resistance tyres to achieve an impressive fuel economy figure of 32.25 km/l, while CO2 emissions are restricted to 82 g/km. All engines are Euro VI compliant and will also be available on the refreshed Volkswagen Polo as well in Europe.
Internationally, the 2015 Skoda Fabia will be competing with the Volkswagen Polo, Honda Jazz, Suzuki Swift, Renault Clio, Vauxhall Corsa, Hyundai i20 and the likes in the segment. In the Indian context, the launch of the 2015 Fabia is still uncertain as the Indian division of Skoda is concentrating on the segments above the Rapid sedan and are also developing new products based on the Rapid’s platform.
