When it comes to talking about American muscle cars, one name always comes to anyone’s mind who knows a thing or two about sports cars, Ford Mustang. Launched way back in 1964, the model was the automaker’s most successful launch since the famous Model A. As a matter of fact, the Mustang was so successful, that Ford competitors were forced to launch cars like the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Plymouth Barracuda and the Dodge Challenger to name a few. So even if you didn’t know about the cult following the Mustang created when it was launched, you can judge its impact by looking at the names of its rivals mentioned above.
Presently, the Ford Mustang is in its sixth generation and as we reported in the year 2013, its current iteration is due for a launch in our country. Yes people you heard it right, it’s coming. According to a few insiders at Ford, the Mustang may come to India around the festive period of the year. Mark Fields, Ford’s global CEO is said to have mentioned the same to few dealers when the Sanand factory was being inaugurated. India will get the right hand drive version of the iconic sports car which is produced for the UK and Australian markets and will even find its way to Sri Lanka as confirmed last year.
One of the most well-known cars across the globe, the 2015 Ford Mustang is sold with three engine options – 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine which produces more than 305 BHP of power and 406 Nm of torque, a 5.0-litre V8 unit that churns out 420 BHP of power and 528 Nm of torque and a 3.7-litre V6 engine producing 300 BHP of power and 366 Nm of torque. The engines come with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. When launched in India, the Mustang will serve as the flagship offering from the company and will try to create a premium image for the brand here as well. The Mustang comes loaded with a host of features including eight airbags, rear parking camera, independent front and rear suspensions and a lot more.
The Ford Mustang will be brought to India via the CBU route and will be priced upwards of Rs. 50 lakhs (ex-showroom) as a result. Overall, 2015 seems to be a very important year for Ford with four launches on the cards, which include the Ford Figo Aspire compact sedan launching first, followed by the Ford Figo hatchback which will replace the current-generation Figo, the new Ford Endeavour SUV and finally, the Ford Mustang, as the company looks at regaining its lost market share.
