The Yamaha FZ FI V2.0 made its debut last week to mixed reactions, but a lot of rave reviews. The 150cc motorcycle now gets a fuel injection system, a first in the segment; however, the power and torque has been reduced compared to the older version. With the FZ having made its official market launch, it’s about time the updated Fazer is also showcased to the world. Now, Throttlequest reader Spandan Singh spotted the updated Fazer (most likely to be called Fazer 2.0) for the first time with new exteriors completely undisguised.
The 2014 Yamaha Fazer 2.0 gets the updated exteriors from the FZ FI 2.0, while the half fairing gets styling updates. As the images indicate, the styling is far more modern with sharper lines as well as a little flamboyance in the twin headlight design. Mechanically, expect the same powertrain to be carried over from the new FZ. The motorcycle could be powered by a 149cc single-cylinder motor with fuel injection technology that produces 13.1 PS of power at 8000 RPM and 12.8 Nm of torque at 6000 RPM. Yamaha could offer more power to justify the touring positioning of the bike.
Another possibility is that of a bigger 170-180cc engine to be plonked on to the upgraded Fazer. Targeted as the touring version of the FZ, the Fazer always lacked power and that could most easily be addressed with a bigger engine. However, we doubt if the new engine will be fuel injected, but rather would be a carbureted version. While Yamaha is retailing the old and new versions of the FZ in the country, the Fazer is most likely to be replaced or the older version would be on retail till the existing stock clears.
While the outgoing Yamaha Fazer retails around Rs. 82,000/- (ex-showroom, Mumbai), expect to see a significant price rise on the Fazer 2.0, when launched in the country later this year. With competition intensifying in the 150cc category, Yamaha is certainly upping its ante in the segment that will see new arrivals in the form of the Suzuki Gixxer, updated TVS Apache as well as Honda and Mahindra’s 160cc motorcycles. Keep watching this space for more details on the updated Fazer, as we dig further into Yamaha India’s plans.
