Mercedes-Benz Unveils Its 577 BHP S63 AMG

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the details of the S63 AMG 4MATIC ahead of its premiere at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show which will be held in the month of September. The S63 AMG is the performance version of the Mercedes-Benz flagship saloon, S-Class, enriched with commendable upgrades from the company’s performance division, AMG. The automaker has revealed a set of images to bloom the excitement among mighty German lovers. The 2014 Mercedes S63 AMG will be longer in wheelbase than the standard S-Class and is expected to be launched with a price tag of approximately $3,90,000 US dollars in global markets (around Rs. 2.31 crores in India).

The AMG division has extensively upgraded the standard Mercedes S-Class to maintain the legacy of extreme models in the AMG series. The significant changes to the exteriors are the wide air scoops on the bumper, thick chrome slats on the front grille, Bi-Turbo V8 badges on the sides along with beefed up rocker sills. The power comes from a 5.5-litre twin-turbo, V8 engine, tuned by AMG that produces an insanely insane 577 BHP of power with a torque output of 900 Nm that starts building up from only 2250 RPM and goes up to 3750 RPM. It works together with a seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT (Multi Clutch Transmission) along with three driving modes to select: C (Controlled Efficiency), S (Sport) and M (Manual). The former ‘C’ mode activates the engine start-stop function to give maximum fuel efficiency.

The 2014 Mercedes S63 AMG weighs only 1995 kgs for the rear-wheel drive version which is 100 kgs less than its predecessor. The adoption of a 78 Ah lithium-ion battery and carbon fibre for the spare wheel housing has aided AMG engineers to maintain the weight below the two ton mark. The company officials said that the all wheel drive variant will also weigh similarly which is achieved by the light weight materials and suspension tweaks at the front. The Mercedes S63 AMG accelerates from 0 to 100 km/hr in just 4.4 seconds for the rear wheel drive model (the 4MATIC AWD version does it in 4 seconds) with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/hr. However, an optional driver’s package for the full-size sedan boosts the speed limit to 300 km/hr.

The Mercedes S63 AMG features a re-tuned auto-adaptive air suspension aided with the New Magic Body Control System. The innovative body control system works in collaboration with a front-windscreen mounted camera that provides data for road conditions ahead on the way. The body system alters the suspension for each wheel independently to churn out maximum comfort for the occupants. The all-aluminium AMG alloy wheels are shod with 19-inch tyres in 255/45 and 285/40 sizes for front and rear respectively. Buyers can also purchase optional accessories like 20-inch wheels and carbon-ceramic brakes at an additional cost.

The S63 AMG will reach major global markets by the end of this year. Mercedes-Benz revealed the sixth generation S-Class (codenamed as W222) in Germany on 15th May which we also have recently reviewed comprehensively (HERE). The new Mercedes S-Class will reach our shores in the beginning of 2014 and is expected to revolutionise the high-end luxury car segment.
