Piaggio has launched the VX variant of the Vespa scooter in India, priced at Rs. 71,380/- (ex-showroom, Delhi). The company has given the Piaggio Vespa VX a host of features such as a front disc brake, tubeless tyres, re-designed instrument cluster and raised chromed saddle handle bar. Buyers can opt for a new seat option finished in beige colour, offered only on red and blue body colours. However we feel the price is on the higher side as the on-road price in Mumbai for the Vespa VX will easily exceed Rs. 80,000/-, which is quite expensive.
The Piaggio Vespa VX is powered by the same 125cc, single-cylinder, 3-valve, air-cooled engine which produces 10.06 BHP of power and 10.06 Nm of torque. The scooter uses a monocoque steel body and the company claims a mileage of 60 km/l (400 kms range from its 8-litre tank). Piaggio wants to focus on the premium scooter segment which they created with the launch of the Vespa LX last year. The Italian automaker has introduced two new colours on the Vespa VX – Verde (metallic green) and Rosa (dual tone red and pink). The black and maroon colours have been discontinued on the regular Vespa due to low demand.

The Piaggio Vespa VX gets a 200 mm front disc brake while the rear braking duties are taken care off by a 140 mm drum. The tubeless tyres are made by MRF (Zapper). The company will continue to sell the regular Vespa as it is, which will now be the entry level product for Piaggio’s 2-wheeler range in India. The Vespa VX is the second phase of expansion of the product in the Indian market. There are no plans to launch the Fly scooter as it was proving to be quite expensive. Piaggio will soon feel the heat in the 125cc space as Honda plans to bring in a 125cc Activa scooter later this year.
