Mahindra has issued a recall for 1577 diesel units of the 2021 Thar to inspect and replace the engine’s camshaft.
The recall covers Thar units manufactured between 7th September 2020 and 25th December 2020, the Indian automaker has stated.
Due to a machine-setting error at the supplier’s plant, the camshafts produced on specific dates, and later fitted in the 1577 identified units of the Thar, may have been affected, states Mahindra.
All of the customers who own the affected cars will be individually contacted by the carmaker that will, through this recall, inspect the engines and, if necessary, replace the component.
Also, the 2021 Mahindra Thar recall will be done free of cost and will be in compliance with the SIAM’s voluntary code on vehicle recall.
For the uninitiated, the 2.2-litre mHawk 130 diesel engine fitted to the 2021 Thar produces a maximum of 130 PS and 300 Nm peak torque. It can be mated to either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Suffice it to say, Mahindra is taking up this recall to prevent a possible engine catastrophe which would work against its brand image and the Thar’s go-anywhere nature.
At present, the automaker is said to be working on a more powerful version of the petrol Thar and a removable hardtop variant of the compact SUV as well. Both might be put on sale soon.
