A highly able successor to the Polo GTI was recently spotted, the 5-door 1.4-litre Volkswagen Polo TSI. It might be powered by a smaller 1.0-litre motor which was imported to India in 2015.
Volkswagen is currently concentrating on the new 3-door 1.8-litre Polo GTI, which was unveiled at that Auto Expo this year. The new Polo GTI with its turbocharged petrol motor, will produce close to 190 HP, making it one of the most powerful hatches in the market. It will come in at a starting price of Rs. 18 lakhs and can go up to Rs. 20 lakhs. This much-hyped vehicle is followed by its close junior, the Polo TSI.
Recently, the 5-door 1.4-litre Polo TSI was spotted in India during testing. It could also possibly use the 1.0-litre TSI engine that Volkswagen had imported back in November 2015. From the spy images, the car resembles the ever present 1.2-litre Polo except for a few minor cosmetic changes. This new Polo will replace the existing 1.2-litre version and can have variants too.
The latest edition reportedly churns out a meaty 145 HP and the smaller 1.0-litre motor produces close to 95 HP. Both the vehicles will come with a 5-speed manual gearbox and front wheel drive for now, until further updates arise. International media reports claim that it just took 8.0 seconds to hit the ton and that is remarkably quick for a hatchback in its segment.
It is suggested that this car might have cylinder deactivation in place. It means that, a lesser number of cylinders are used to churn out power when you are coasting or cruising. This is such a funky, eye-catching feature to have in a low-budget hatch. For now, Volkswagen are expected to price it between Rs. 12 lakhs and Rs. 15 lakhs. At the Auto Expo, it was revealed that the Polo GT was one of the first of their future models. Perhaps, they were hinting at this makeover.
